Shaibu Declares That Nothing Can Hinder His Ambition

Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, has officially announced his candidacy for the 2024 governorship election under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), asserting that no one can impede his ambition.
Making his declaration at the Bishop Kelly Centre in Benin, Shaibu, a local resident, emphasized his connection with the people and called on voters and party members to support his gubernatorial aspirations. With 30 years of political experience, including seven years of collaboration with Governor Godwin Obaseki, Shaibu believes he is well-positioned to succeed Obaseki. He expressed confidence, stating, “Nobody can stop my ambition.”
In a live broadcast on Monday, Shaibu pledged to provide practical governance if elected governor in 2024. Acknowledging the support he received during consultations with Edo people, he emphasized their endorsement of him as an authentic son of the soil. He assured the public that, with divine grace, he would deliver effective governance. The election date, set by the Independent National Electoral Commission, is September 21, 2024.
Shaibu highlighted his achievements as a member of the House of Assembly and later as a federal lawmaker in the House of Representatives. Promising to strengthen the agricultural sector, he committed to continuing and expanding projects initiated by Governor Obaseki, vowing to “hit the ground running.” Despite a slight controversy over the venue for his declaration, Shaibu remains determined to pursue his gubernatorial ambitions.
The deputy governor’s decision to run for governorship has strained his relationship with Governor Obaseki, who reportedly opposes Shaibu’s succession. In the past, Shaibu sought legal intervention to prevent his impeachment but later withdrew the case. Despite his withdrawal, Shaibu continues to face challenges, with his office now located outside the Government House in Benin. Undeterred, he has been actively consulting with politicians and the media, emphasizing the need for experienced and competent leadership to address the state’s needs.
