Liverpool’s Colombian winger, Luis Diaz, received some relief on Saturday as his mother was successfully rescued from kidnappers, though the search continues for his father, according to Colombian President Gustavo Petro. President Petro shared the news on X (formerly known as Twitter), disclosing that Diaz’s mother was found in Barrancas, located in the northern part of the country.
Efforts to locate Diaz’s father remain ongoing, with Colombia’s Attorney General’s Office actively involved in the case. The Attorney General’s Office stated that a specialized team comprising prosecutors, police, and military personnel has been diligently working to pinpoint the whereabouts of the abducted couple, clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident, and bring the responsible individuals to justice.
Reports from local media indicated that Luis Manuel Diaz and Cilenis Marulanda were taken by armed men on motorcycles while at a service station in the La Guajira region. General William Salamanca, the director of the police, has deployed intelligence agents and mobilized other police units in the area to address the situation. Checkpoints have been set up, and individuals on motorcycles and various vehicles are being scrutinized in the ongoing efforts to secure the safe return of both the mother and father of footballer Luis Diaz.
Diala Wilches, the governor of La Guajira, strongly condemned the kidnapping and issued an appeal for the prompt and unharmed release of the abducted couple. She stated, “To the kidnappers, we demand that they return them immediately, safe and sound.”
Luis Diaz, the 26-year-old winger for Liverpool and the Colombian national team, has not made any public statements regarding the situation. Diaz has represented Colombia in international matches 43 times and joined Liverpool from Porto last year.
Liverpool is scheduled to face Nottingham Forest in the Premier League on Sunday amidst these concerning developments.
