Pressure mounts on Klopp as Wolves devour Reds

Pressure continues to grow on Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp, as his side fell to a third successive away defeat in the Premier League for the first time since March 2012. Wolverhampton Wanderers ran out comfortable 3-0 winners at Molineux to leave the Reds 10 points adrift of the top-four.

Liverpool were winless in three league outings heading into this clash, failing to score in the previous two. The Reds’ dire run of form looked set to continue, as Hwang Hee-Chan raced through on goal before seeing his effort deflect off Jöel Matip to beat a helpless Alisson. Things got worse for Liverpool just a matter of minutes later as Wolves doubled their lead. Debutant Craig Dawson struck the hiller blow, as he was quickest to react to prod home a loose ball following a stunning save from Alisson that denied Max Kilman.

Liverpool’s record of 11 consecutive H2H wins in the league was under serious threat, with defensive mishaps plaguing their first half performance. Wolves were standing firm against any potential fightback, as Liverpool had still failed to test José Sá with just 20 minutes remaining. That was until a golden opportunity fell to the feet of Darwin Núñez, but the Uruguayan scuffed his effort straight into the arms of the Portuguese shot-stopper. Núñez’s miss looked to be costly just minutes later when Rúben Neves added Wolves’ third. The midfielder received the ball from a pinpoint pass by Adama Traoré, before he rifled an effort into the bottom corner to cap off another miserable afternoon for the Merseyside outfit.

Julen Lopetegui would’ve been thrilled to end a miserable run of just one win from their last seven games. A crucial three points lifted them out of the relegation zone while placing Liverpool’s season even further into the mire, with the Reds winless in league action since late December’s success over Leicester.
