Bayelsa Governor Asserts Election Fairness Despite Imperfections.
Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State has defended the recently concluded governorship election in the state, acknowledging that while not flawless due to human errors, it was overall free, fair, and transparent. Diri secured victory with 175,196 votes, surpassing his closest rival, Timipre Sylva of the All Progressives Congress, who garnered 115,262 votes. Despite challenges and delays, Diri emphasized the difficulties unique to Bayelsa’s terrain and resource constraints. He attributed election issues to state politicians engaging in electoral misconduct rather than faults with the electoral commission. Diri expressed a commitment to extending friendship to opponents who engaged in a peaceful contest.
