The Delta State Command of the Nigeria Police Force will this morning (Wednesday) arraign Inspector Ebri Ubi who killed a man identified as Onyeka Ibe for refusing to give him a bribe of N100.
Herald Reporters gathered that Ubi would be arraigned at a Magistrate Court sitting in Asaba.
The police spokesperson in the state, Edafe Bright, also confirmed this on Wednesday morning in a notice.
“INSPR Ubi Ebri has been dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force and will be charged to court tomorrow, Wednesday, 19th April 2023. The court will be determined tomorrow,” Edafe said in a statement.
Herald Reporters had reported that hundreds of youths in early April staged a peaceful protest following the killing of Onyeka Ibe in Asaba, the Delta State capital.
The deceased was a phone seller in the popular Ogbeogonogo market.
The protesting youths demanded justice for the slain phone dealer and vowed to mobilise more youths for more protests until justice was served.
Following the protest, the police ordered the arrest and detention of Ubi.
Edafe said the police commissioner on receipt of the tragic news immediately ordered the arrest and detention of the errant police officer and directed his transfer to the State Criminal Investigation Department.
Edafe assured that the offending officer would be subjected to internal disciplinary measures, including criminal prosecution.
He appealed to members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding, stressing that justice would not only be done but would be seen to have been done.
